Marlisa Simonis (1990, Amsterdam, NL) lives and works in Utrecht. After first studying Art at the Breitner Academie and later Applied Psychology in Amsterdam, she obtained her Master's degree in Fine Art at the Classical Art Academy for Painting in Groningen in 2020. From a young age she was interested in observing behaviour in people around her and the ways they communicate with each other. Growing up in a time where technology, computers and access to the internet are rapidly advancing, Marlisa became inspired by people gradually expressing themselves more and more through technology.
Her art is a visualization of contemporary topics like social media, virtual reality and video games merging with everyday life. Characteristic to her work is the bold but controlled brushstrokes and use of colour. She also experiments with carefully constructed layers of texture and opacity to give the viewer the feeling of multiple worlds merging together. In this digital age, where people are feeling more socially detached than ever, her works often portray multiple people, together but isolated.
